FACTS ABOUT THE COMMISSION
California’s Citizens Redistricting Commission is a national model for how states draw electoral districts once every decade. In 2008 and 2010, California voters authorized the 14-member Citizens Commission to draw fair and impartial boundaries for the State Legislature and the state’s congressional districts. Since then, the Commission has successfully completed two redistricting cycles. By putting the power in the hands of citizens instead of politicians, the Commission ensures fair and competitive elections, better representation, and greater transparency.

Preserves an open and transparent redistricting process, inviting thousands of Californians—over 35,000 in the most recent cycle—to share their perspectives. The Citizens Redistricting Commission ensures maps are shaped in the sunlight, by the people, rather than in backroom deals at the Capitol.

When politicians draw the lines, voters’ voices are often their last concern. The Citizens Commission protects against gerrymandering that disproportionately harms communities of color.
